Sometimes eating out at restaurants can be challenging and even disheartening when you’ve spent so much time and energy forming healthy eating habits at home.

You’re often met with alot of sugar, deep frying, and hidden ingredients.

We’ve put together a few tips for eating out at restaurants so you can maintain your healthy eating habits.

Here’s 5 Easy Ordering Tips:

Tip 1:

Watch out for fried menu items.

”Crispy” is usually another term for “fried food.” The problem with fried foods is that they not only contain excess sodium and empty calories, but they are also heavily processed with hydrogenated oils (trans fats) known to increase inflammation.

Tip 2:

Look for grilled, baked, broiled, or roasted.

Choose proteins and vegetables that are grilled, baked, broiled, or roasted — as opposed to deep fried or battered, these cooking methods don’t require excess oil (trans fats) for processing.

Tip 3:

Opt for vinaigrette-based salad dressings.

Skip the thick, cream-based dressings as these often contain added trans fats, salt and/or sugar.

Tip 4:

Choose soups with a clear broth.

When looking for a soup to order, choose one with a clear broth – especially lentil, minestrone, split pea, or another bean/vegetable soup and skip the cream-based soups.

Tip 5:

Whole grains are your friend.

Choose meals that contain whole grains over refined grains — quality whole grains include quinoa, brown or wild rice, buckwheat, or faro.

Overall, it’s best to keep it simple–choose dishes with fewer ingredients over those that utilize a number of different sauces and/or dressings. A healthy eating pattern is all about being mindful of your food choices, portion sizing, and meal timing so you can stay on track and enjoy the foods you love!
